Indiana Gun Permits

  • The Indiana firearm application is a two-part process beginning with a recommendation from your local law enforcement agency. The application is then sent to the Indiana State Police for review and final approval.  


The Indiana State Police Superintendent is charged with the responsibility of issuing the license and administering the licensing program.


Within Martin County, you must begin the process by:

  • Going online to in.gov/isp
  • Click on Firearms Licensing
  • Click on Firearms License Application Process
  • Click on the link in Step 1
  • Click on the APPLY button on the far left and the prompts will walk you through the entire application process.
  • Click on the link to L1 Morpho Trust to schedule a fingerprint appointment.  NOTE: The Martin Sheriff's Office does NOT perform fingerprinting for firearm permitting.  You must schedule fingerprinting online and complete at one of the designated sites available.    


To Complete the Application Process (Please allow at least 48 hours after completing fingerprints before appearing at the Sheriff's Office for local processing)  : 

  • You must appear in person at the Martin County Sheriff's Office with proof of fingerprinting, Driver's License and/or Indiana Government Issued I.D. card and current firearm permit (if applicable), your online application confirmation number, and payment for your license (see fee schedule below).  If you live within the city limits of Loogootee, you must appear in person at the Loogootee Police Department.  


  • The application is then processed and transmitted to the Indiana State Police for final approval.  



Current Costs of Firearm Licenses in the State of Indiana:

  • Four Year Personal Protection ($30 - Payable to County) ($30 - Payable to State)
  • Lifetime Personal Protection/No Current License ($50 - Payable to County) ($75 - Payable to State)
  • Lifetime Personal Protection/Current Valid License ($40 - Payable to County) ($60 - Payable to State)
  • Retired Law Enforcement Officer (Exempt - Payable to County) (Exempt - Payable to State)
  • Retired Corrections Officer (Exempt - Payable to County) (Exempt - Payable to State)
  • Firearms Dealer ($40 - Payable to County) (Exempt - Payable to State)

     

Frequently Asked Questions:

*Will I still be required to be fingerprinted if I have been printed for a previous hand gun license? 

Yes, the State of Indiana does not retain prints on file.  They are simply used for background checks only. 


*What do I need to bring with me to my fingerprint appointment?

You will need to bring a VALID Government Issued picture ID, your application confirmation number, your local fee (payable to the county) and proof of fingerprinting.  


*How can I check the status of my application?

You can check your application status at https://firearms.ariesportal.com/  Please note that it can take up to 60 days to receive your permit after local fee is paid
